Update: April 11, 5:15 p.m.
Two hours after the evacuation, Vice President of Instruction, Dr. Irene Malmgren, stated that Building 6 would be closed for the rest of the day. She said that Police and Campus Safety would circulate the air of the building which could take two to six hours.
The fire department was not called because the source of the smell was unknown. Police and Campus Safety remained in control of the situation.
Campus Safety will be escorting students and faculty in and out of the building to retrieve any items left behind.
At approximately 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, an alarm sounded in the campus library promoting an evacuation of Building 6.
Librarians apologized for interrupting the students work but informed everyone that the library was being evacuated. Librarians informed all students that “This is not a drill.” Staff also encouraged students to remain calm as they exited the building.
Two SAC.Media editors went to the private study rooms to help notify students of the evacuation. Police and Campus Safety was on scene helping the library staff evacuate the building.
There are conflicting reports of a possible gas leak and reports of “something burning.” However, there is no official statement regarding the situation.
Almost an hour later, students and staff are still waiting to reenter the building.
SAC.Media has contacted Police and Campus Safety and are waiting for a callback.
Stay tuned for updates.
