World Food Day is celebrated annually on Oct. 16. This day celebrates the date the U.N. created the Food and Agriculture Organization. More importantly, it’s a day to raise awareness about world hunger and promote advancements being made in food industries around the world.
In honor of this day, I asked a couple of our fellow Mounties about their favorite food spots near Mt. SAC. Here’s the list I’ve compiled that you can check out to expand your palette, aside from the typical burgers and pizza.
Pho Hai – Vietnamese
Location: 1263 N Grand Ave, Walnut, CA 91789
“Pho Hai is one of my favorite spots near campus. For the portion they give, it’s definitely worth the price. Plus they offer stamp cards so once you get 10 stamps, you get a bowl for free!” – Dylan James Walters, 21, kinesiology major
Baby Elephant Thai Cuisine – Thai
Location: 20795 Amar Rd, Walnut, CA 91789
“Baby Elephant across the street has $7.99 lunch specials. It’s well worth it!” – Rob Lyndton, 24, nursing major
Taco Nazo – Mexican
Location: 1267 N Grand Ave, Walnut, CA 91789
“Taco Nazo is a great place for fish and shrimp tacos. It’s just across the street so I can easily walk over after class.” – Leni Santos, 19, English major
Curry Up – Indian
Location: 4302, 3560 W Temple Ave C, Pomona, CA 91768
“My boyfriend is Indian and he introduced me to this place. They have one of the best and affordable chicken tikka. I also love their mango lassi, which I usually get if I want something organic and fruity.” – Kevin Le, 22, graphic design major
Sake Sushi – Japanese
Location: 20795 Amar Rd, Walnut, CA 91789
“Sake Sushi across the street is really filling for around $12. It’s one of my favorite spots.” – Tamar Al-Tahan, 24, computer science major
Titas of Manila Filipino Kitchen – Filipino
Location: 2532 S Azusa Ave, West Covina, CA 91792
“It’s hard to find good Filipino food around campus and even though this place is in West Covina, I try to eat there during the days when I have a long break in between classes. For under $10, I can get a full meal with two different viands plus a drink. It’s really good and authentic Filipino food.” – Myka Gonzales, 25, nursing major
Sweet Veggie – Taiwanese/Chinese
Location: 20747 Amar Rd #8D, Walnut, CA 91789
“I was looking for a vegetarian restaurant near campus when I came across Sweet Veggie. This place is great because the ‘all-you-can-eat’ buffet is only $9.99 and it comes with hot pot. It’s very affordable for college students.” – Aaron Centineo, 20, sociology major
So, if you’re looking for affordable restaurants near Mt. SAC, or maybe you’re in the mood to try other cuisines, go check out these places and try for yourself.
You’ll never know what you’re missing until then, and be the judge if your fellow Mounties were right to recommend these places.
