Keep Your Politics Out Of My Body
No matter what side you’re on, this proposed draft will affect you for years to come
Today is May 3, 2022 and we are living through another unfortunate and historic chapter in our country’s history. According to Politico, the Supreme Court has drafted an opinion showcasing the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
This has to be the worst decision ever made.
For those who don’t know, Roe v. Wade was a historic 1973 decision made by the Supreme Court making abortion legal during the first trimester of a woman’s pregnancy. Now it is in danger of being struck down. A decision set to affect everyone. Yes, men included.
Abortion has always been a sensitive subject for many. Some groups support and others are against it. No matter your stance on abortion, one thing is clear: this decision is set to make every woman’s life hell.
Abortion should continue to be a woman’s right. Abortion is not just about terminating an unplanned pregnancy. Abortion clinics, such as Planned Parenthood, are in place to help provide women with a safe environment, offer information on abortions, provide other services such as birth control including mental health and men’s health services.
Women have a right to have a safe abortion without fearing retaliation from family, friends, or politicians who are against it. This is truly sickening to realize that women are being attacked for choosing to have a safe abortion.
And who’s to say it will not prevent them from coming after gay marriage or interracial marriage. I myself am in an interracial marriage and the mere thought of basic human rights being overturned is horrifying. In my personal opinion politics needs to stay out of basic human rights.
Politicians can’t decide what women of all colors and genders can choose to do with their bodies. No one except women themselves. Many people view abortions as a woman terminating their unwanted pregnancy. While that may be the case for many, there are different factors that play into that decision.
Few women who terminate an unplanned pregnancy do so because they may not be financially ready or cannot financially support a child. For another group the pregnancy will cause some life or death issues. Honestly, whatever the decision may be, it is a woman’s choice whether or not she should keep or end a pregnancy.
Politicians should stick to what they do best: putting the American public’s best interest and keeping personal opinions out. Keep your dirty political talk away from women’s bodies. I am absolutely terrified to see what the future has in store for us. A world where a gun has more rights than a woman. We’ve studied women’s rights in history books. Yet here are once again protesting and hoping for a decision that continues to protect that basic human right.
Not many women can afford the upkeep of a child without support or a steady income. The Roe decision should not even be challenged. Little by little, they are stripping women of their rights. We know how this ends: with politicians dictating what women can do with their body until the freedom we once enjoyed is gone.
