Mt. SAC’s Women’s Golf has been on a winning streak this year paving the way for a state title as championship season gets underway. On Oct. 16, SAC won the last conference match of the season coming on top with a team score of 312.
Sophomore team captain Kylie Lau is currently leading the team in scores, paving the way for their success. Lau led her team with an impressive score of 76, staying consistent and being the lowest scorer for her team. The Fullerton Golf Course seemed to be quite a challenging course with its narrow fairways and muddy terrain.
Lau described the team as “ready and locked in” for the upcoming championship. SAC came in 2nd place for the state championship last year. This year the team is confident they’ll secure 1st after their continuous winning streak throughout the conference.
Lau gets her confidence about winning state from her team. She describes the team as close-knit as they’re only six girls on the team. According to the group members they operate more as a family which aids them in competitive situations.
Last year, Lau placed 3rd in the state individually for Mt. SAC, being the lowest-scoring player for the team.
19-year-old Lau is no amateur at the sport after playing golf for 11 years. Her dad first took her out golfing as a kid, then she transitioned into playing golf for Walnut High School before attending Mt. SAC.
She said growing up playing golf has shaped her identity and character. Her father raised her on golfing classics such as Happy Gilmore to really instill golfing culture in her.
“My favorite part is when the ball goes in,” Lau said, “The satisfaction when you’re like, ‘I did that,’ you know?”
Lau describes long putting as her specialty because her skills in putting have gotten her to where she is today. Her proficiency in short distance has gotten her many birdies on certain holes compared to long-distance shots. She explained how the draw from her driver makes narrow long-distance shots intimidating due to the curvature that happens.
“I will just close my eyes and listen to music, so that way it’s clearing my mind out.” Lau answered when asked about pre match rituals. Her pre-match music changes regularly but recently she has been listening to Clairo to remain composed throughout her match.
As a biochemistry major, Lau has big goals ahead of her as she plans on transferring to UCLA, UCSD or UCI. Lau doesn’t look to continue her golfing career due to her academic workload but looks forward to playing recreationally with family and friends.
Over the next two weeks Lau will be leading SAC into conference finals. The matches are scheduled for Wednesday, October 23, Monday, October 28, and Wednesday, October 30. Let’s hope that SAC Women’s Golf can keep up their winning streak.
