There are no magic ingredients in the food served at Alpha and Omega Burgers and their iconic breakfast burritos has been one of the reasons that has made this restaurant a local favorite.
Alpha and Omega Burgers located in downtown Covina on the corner of Citrus Ave. and Badillo St., have been serving these classic meals for nearly 40 years and have kept customers coming back. If asked what to order for breakfast, their staff will point you to their breakfast burritos. Ranging from $6- $13, these iconic meals are famous and reliable to fill up customers, never disappointing the community that see them as staples and family favorites.
Breakfast burritos, served nearly anywhere, are a reliable source of comfort, energy and with a cup of coffee, a good conversation, or people watching if eating alone. There are no rules carved in stone in making these highly recognizable dishes and many, if not all, can make one at home. Yet, people are still willing to wait in line for one as they would attest that they are some of the best in town.
Thus, the easy to handle, moderately light, and predictably satisfying meal at Alpha and Omega is able to stand alone and make anyone a loyal customer.
The breakfast burritos come in a variety of options, starting with the classic sausage, bacon or ham options that would be found in nearly any dinner. Chorizo, all meat, asada and even a pastrami burrito give the connoisseur a fuller experience to their breakfast. To be safe, I ordered the sausage burrito with a cup of coffee, and with my first bite, I was glad I trusted my gut.
Most breakfast burritos can sit heavy in your stomach, as they can be served with refried beans depending on the restaurant, but Alpha and Omega sticks to the basics that all can easily handle. The classic sausage burrito includes eggs, cheese and hash browns wrapped inside a warm tortilla. The tortilla was well balanced in that it was heated evenly and no heavy ends had to be worked through as some burritos have “level-like” rolled endings that feel like a mission to consume, making most customers leave them on the plate like crust ends of un-finished sandwiches.
The burrito also seems like it has more eggs than sausage and is not heavily salted. This may be the reason why you taste the mild cheddar at the first bite. Any type of seasoning will save a dish from being bland and the burrito could have used some. So was it bland? Not really. But this is where the salsa came into play. Made fresh daily, it’s flavorful and not overly hot in taste, complemented the burrito.
The sausage and eggs are cooked in a frying pan together then placed on a tortilla heating on a flat stove next to a pile of hash-browns waiting to be wrapped up and served. Another complaint I had were the hash-browns being piled on top of each other. They don’t get a chance to “crisp-up” and therefore give little contrast in texture in the burrito. Though not “mush”, having crispy hash-browns would add layers to the burrito giving it dimension and depth. Yes, “dimension and depth.”
Salsa is served with all breakfast burritos and though, ordering extra runs you about 55 cents, it is the finishing touch on a community classic. Ordered with a “cup of joe”, the meal totaled about $13 and would fit into the budget of an average college student out with their friends.
Despite two complaints: a lack of seasoning perhaps in the hash- browns and not much texture, I would rate this breakfast burrito a 4 out of 5. Technically, rounded up from a 3.8 on my scale. However, the fluffy eggs, melted cheese, chopped sausage links and decent hash-browns wrapped in a sturdy, but semi-light tortilla still puts this dish on the radar for the Mt. SAC community to enjoy and would be recommended to anyone who finds themselves out shopping near Downtown Covina this holiday season.

If you want a more crisp hash brown taste I would definitely recommend asking for the hash browns to be deep fried. It will take less time to crisp the hash browns and it will add more depth to the burrito and make it more flavorful in my opinion if you decide to go another time!
