Women’s Wrestling hosted an invitational on March 29, featuring 10 other schools or club programs with coaches optimistic that this event will help their wrestlers make it to the next level.
The Mt. SAC Women’s Open featured dozens of wrestlers from 11 schools and wrestling clubs in total. The main goal was to showcase the talent of all their wrestlers in every single weight class as well as help their wrestlers get noticed by the universities.
”It’s about building a rapport with all the high schools and to show there is wrestling for girls after high school. From here they can try to make the Olympic team and they have a lot of opportunities to wrestle at the universities,” Assistant Coach Robert Dominguez said.
SAC had a very successful event with four winners in their weight classes.
SAC’s first place winners were Makenzie Muniz in the 117 weight class, Leilani Lazaro in the 124 weight class, Tehya Ledesma in the 138 weight class and Alexis Jimenez in the 145 weight class. They also had two runners ups who were Makenzie Muniz in the 117 weight class and Zitlali Sarmiento in the 131 weight class according to TrackWrestling.com.
This invitational not only helped SAC attract talent to their school but also benefited the wrestlers by giving them a stage to showcase their skills in front of other universities.
“It’s an opportunity for the community to show their athletics and also their academics, to show they can do both as well,” Dominguez said.
