SAC softball closed out the regular season with a narrow 4–3 win over the Antelope Valley Marauders on Thursday, April 24, and will now host their first playoff game at home this Friday.
Despite not playing their sharpest, SAC managed to find a way to win, finishing the season with an overall record of 26-13.
SAC struck early, scoring two runs in the first inning to take the lead. The Marauders responded quickly, tying the game with two runs of their own in the second. SAC broke the ice in the fourth and fifth innings, each time pushing across a single run.
Freshman pitcher and utility player Isabella Guerrero (25) delivered an RBI in the fourth, followed by freshman outfielder Isabella Aspeitia (23) adding another in the fifth. Both innings saw SAC load the bases, but they were only able to capitalize with one run each time.
The Marauders trimmed the lead with a run in the sixth, but SAC held firm. A clean defensive effort in the final inning closed out the game and secured the victory.
Although SAC outhit the Marauders 14 to 6, the game remained close throughout. “We just didn’t capitalize when we needed to when we had runners on base,” head coach Rubilena Rojas said. “It wasn’t our best but it’s a win and the girls did enough to win the game and we are just excited for playoffs and we get to host on Friday.”
The win came on sophomore night, with seven sophomores honored after their win in their final regular season home game. These sophomores were first baseman and utility player Audrey White (11), designated player Samantha Chavez (20), catcher Kamyla Cerda (18), shortstop Katie Griego (6), second baseman and utility player Kiana Kadena (19), catcher and first baseman Morgan Kneubuhler (9), and outfielder Mia Martin (27).
”It’s always the hardest thing I do every single year with the sophomores leaving and they will always have a special place in my heart. There were a lot of alumni here,” said Rojas. “We are a family, these girls are family for life.”
They’ll now turn their attention to the postseason, starting May 2, where home field advantage should prove crucial.
