It’s not easy breaking into a male-dominated sport, but women are steadily reshaping the culture of skateboarding.
More women are skating now than ever before. The growing visibility of female skaters is helping shift long-held stigmas and broaden what it means to belong in the skateboarding community

A huge part of skateboarding culture comes from its attention to local community building.
Pawnshop Skate Co. in Old Town Covina has curated its own community for the past decade. Since its storefront was opened 1994, it has been a place for young skaters to find decks, parts and more.
Skate communities often begin with local shops, which grow alongside the scene. From those roots, some of the industry’s biggest brands and sponsors emerge.

This gallery also holds another message within it, activism.

This piece specifically shows how pollution harms our oceans and the animals that habitat it.
The mission of the piece, titled “Entanglement” says, “There are 2,000 origami Whales and Dolphins on this net. One hundred fifty times the number of cetaceans (dolphins and whales) die annually as a result of bycatch or entanglement.”

Apache Skateboards, founded in 2002 by Douglas Miles, gives a heartfelt nod to Native communities.
A reminder that we cannot forget the land we walk on was originally cared for by Native American tribes.

The exhibition titled “Art of Skate Exhibit: Activism, Art and Design” is open from Sept. 18 until Nov. 13 inside the Diana Berger Art Gallery. The gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays and is also open on the first and third Saturday of the following months.
