October is the season for fright, and the Mt. SAC women’s soccer team played their part as they would scare away the Cerritos Falcons in a spooky 4-1 victory on Oct. 8.
The game started off slow. SAC took shot after shot in the first half but nothing converted into a goal.

“Be patient,” head coach Juan Sanchez said about the chances SAC created in the first half. “Because we created numerous opportunities in the first half and they just didn’t go in, but we were just going to be a matter of time before we get one, we’re gonna get three or four [goals]”.
The goals didn’t hit the back of the net in the first half, but that didn’t stop SAC’s magical duo of sophomore midfielder Nadine Padilla (2) and sophomore midfielder and team captain Bella Gomez (21) from keeping the ball moving and looking for the next best play.

“I try to do anything I can, to be honest.” Padilla (2) said.”Anything to get the ball up, to keep the ball moving. That’s our main goal.”
Going into the huddle at halftime the score was 0-0 and SAC knew they had a problem on their hands. Coming out of the huddle to the second half SAC looked like they had the answers.

Just eight minutes into the second half sophomore forward Eden Ramirez (3) teamed up with freshman defender Jillian Harriman (25) to score the first goal of the game. But just as fast as SAC would score, the Falcons responded with an immediate counter punch. Scoring only seconds after Ramirez’s first goal.
“It was a 0-0 halftime score, we got one [goal] and fell asleep,” Coach Sanchez said. “We gave one back.”

If there’s one thing about SAC athletics, it’s that once they see one goal go in, no matter what the sport, it seems to light a fire in the SAC Sports team players.
“My role is to be as positive as I can,” Gomez (21) said about being the team captain. “My best is to try and encourage everyone to the best of their abilities.”

As SAC moved around looking for the next best opening, freshman defender Valerie Potesio (12) found Ramirez (3) assisting her on not only Ramirez’s (3) second goal of the night, but the goal that would give SAC the lead.
Up 2-1, SAC wouldn’t look back.

Once SAC got a rythem going they started scoring goals at will. Putting in two more goals from the likes of freshman forward Zophia Romero (5) and freshman midfielder Victoria Boyde (6), and assisted by Jimenez (7) and Sanchez (19).
“It feels so good working with girls that I enjoy on and off the field,” Gomez (21) said. “We have a really strong team.”

“We’ve been working on it all week,” Padilla (2) said about SAC scoring goals. “Just take what we worked on in practice into the game, translate it here. Then we got four goals because of that.”
SAC won their first conference game 4-1 and left the field feeling amazing.

“It gives us more motivation and drive to push to the end,” Gomez (21) said.
SAC’s next game will be away Oct. 14 against the East Los Angeles Huskies where they look to add another win to their two game win streak and also to put the Huskies into the dog pound.
