As most of the spring sports prepare for their respective playoff runs, they also face the challenge of finishing their regular seasons on a high note. The softball team finished their season as the number two ranked team in the state, while the swim team captured their sixth consecutive conference championship. It’s ring season at Mt. SAC, and we’re barely getting started.
BASEBALL
The baseball team won two out of three against East Los Angeles last week. They won the first game on April 23, 11-2. Kyle Koontz had four hits and two RBIs, Michael Sandoval had three hits and three RBIs, and Jacob Dominguez had a pair of hits and RBIs. Noah Woodall did a good job to give up only two runs on 10 hits in six innings to pick up the win. They were shut out on April 25, 3-0. The Mounties were only able to muster five hits. Tyler Hazlett gave up all three runs in just four innings to take the loss. They won the rubber match on April 26, 4-2. Sandoval broke the 1-1 tie in the eighth with a three-run homer. Steven Ordorica picked up the win out of relief. He went 4.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits and two walks. The team moves to 22-17 on the season and will head to the CCCAA regional playoffs against Santa Ana starting on May 3.
SOFTBALL
The softball team’s winning streak has gone up to 14 with a pair of wins last week. They won 10-3 against Chaffey on April 23. Ally Longtree had a couple of solo homers and Quinn De Avila added one of her own. Alexia Silvas went three innings and allowed two runs on two hits and a walk, while striking out four. They then beat East Los Angeles handily in five innings, 9-0. Ciara Granado hit a two-run homer, while Candace Haliburton and Vicky Gutierrez also drove in two. Briana Wheeler was dominant like always. She picked up her 21st win of the season, allowing one hit and one walk, while striking out 11. The team is now 36-4 and will play either Cerritos or Orange Coast in the CCCAA SoCal Regional First Round on May 3.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
The South Coast Conference Championships were on April 27. Phillip Rocha finished in first place in the 800-meter finals with a time of 1:54.51. Adan Castellanos and Isaiah Wilson finished second with a time of 1:54.79. Jose Melchor finished second in the 5000-meter finals with a time of 15:43.32. Huerta took home first place in the 10,000-meter finals with a time of 32:17.39. Leroy Williams IV came in first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.30. Robert Taft finished third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.24. Joseluis Pluma (9:45.16) finished third in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Hennes, Taft, Rocha, and Travion Phillips finished second in the 4 X 400-meter relays with a time of 3:19.93. Shallamar Poole came in first in the high jump with a mark of 2 meters. Phillips finished tied for second at 1.9 meters. Nathaniel Carranza (4.6 meters), Ryan Lopez (4.45 meters), and Calvin Oury (4.15 meters) finished first and second respectively in the pole vault. Phillips claimed second in the long jump with a mark of 7.09 meters. Isaiah Mitchell (14.01 meters) finished third in the triple jump. Andrew Aguilar finished third in the discus finals with a mark of 35.34 meters. Javier Sandoval Guzman finished first in the hammer finals with a mark of 39.28 meters. Aguilar finished first in the decathlon with 5909 points. The CCCAA So Cal Preliminaries are on May 4.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Elizabeth Chidester finished third in the 800-meter finals with a time of 2:34.92. Rebecca Ruiz finished second in the 1500-meter finals with a time of 4:59.99. Ruiz (19:01.63), Montserrath Celis (19:04.43), and Sadie Encinas (19:31.16) finished in the top three in the 5000-meter finals. Celis (40:48.99) and Encinas (40:54.24) also were first and second respectively in the 10,000-meter finals. Kayla Rodriguez finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.5. Rodriguez (1:04.03) and Terra Valadez (1:07.76)finished second and third respectively in the 400-meter hurdles. Yesenia Flores (12:18.46) and Evelyn Peralta (13:04.77) finished first and third respectively in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Rodriguez, Jasmine Garcia, Maia Harvey, and Valadez finished second in the 4 X 100-meter relays with a time of 49.8. Rodriguez, Veladez, Garcia, and Elizabeth Chidester finished second in the 4 X 400-meter relays with a time of 4:06.29. Chidester tied for first in the high jump with a mark of 1.45 meters. Darla Gonzalez (4 meters), Amy Campos (3.35 meters), and Mayara De Souza (3.35 meters) finished first and tied for second respectively in the pole vault. Senna Forkner finished first in the javelin with a throw of 36.35 meters. Chidester finished third in the heptathlon with 3687 points.
