Friday the 13th′s Moon Melodies

Superstitious people beware: We’re rocking out under this rare moon on the unluckiest of days

Watch out for black cats and keep your mirrors unbroken. Today is Friday the 13th, and a full moon will be flying across the sky tonight. This is the first time we’ve had such an eerie combination in almost twenty years, and it will be the last time we’ll see it again until August 13, 2049.

That’s not all, though! With the natural satellite being the closest full moon to the autumnal equinox, it will also be a harvest moon. The lunar event specialties don’t stop there. The moon is going to be a few thousand miles farther than usual. This makes it a micromoon—on account of how much smaller it looks, unlike the supermoons everyone hears about.

In honor of this sudden moon madness, here are a few songs to chase the bad omens away.

Talking to the Moon by Bruno Mars

Lyrics to Look Out For: “Talking to the moon / Tryin’ to get to you / In hopes you’re on the other side talking to me too / Or am I a fool, who sits alone, talking to the moon.”

For those who want to use the moon to shine a light on their already unfortunate heartache, this is the perfect song to cry to. Whether you’ve found your soulmate or not, who knows if they might be looking at tonight’s moon and wishing you were there with them.

Of the Night by Bastille

Lyrics to Look Out For: “Oh I can ease you of your pain, / Feel you give me love again, / Round and round we go, / Each time I hear you say, / This is the rhythm of the night.”

Bastille’s mash up of Corona’s “The Rhythm of the Night” and Snap!’s “Rhythm Is a Dancer” is a song that’s almost otherworldly in its lyrics and beating heart of a bass. It’s the kind of song you open yourself up to until you feel your spirit dancing with your demons.

Bury a Friend by Billie Eilish

Lyrics to Look Out For: “Why aren’t you scared of me? Why do you care for me? / When we all fall asleep, where do we go?”

This song is great for those who are friends with what goes bump in the night. It has an eerie vibe, noise effects that creep up your spine, and a rumbling bass that makes it feel like your darker self is trying to break out.

Howlin’ for You by The Black Keys

Lyrics to Look Out For: “I must admit, I can’t explain / Any of these thoughts racin’ through my brain, it’s true / Baby I’m howlin’ for you.”

Stay in today, but get out tonight and let your inner animal run free. Call the moon closer to Earth, howl for your love and stomp to the drums with the song blasting behind you.

Seven Devils by Florence + the Machine

Lyrics to Look Out For: “Seven devils all around you / Seven devils in your house / See, I was dead when I woke up this morning / And I’ll be dead before the day is done.”

Atmospheric as hell, this song brings inspiration back to life in the form of a haunting lyrics a soul-stirring background that will make you feel like throwing your hands into the air in praise of a being that isn’t listening.

Ghost by Halsey

Lyrics to Look Out For: My ghost, where’d you go? / I can’t find you in the body sleeping next to me / My ghost, where’d you go? / What happened to the soul that you used to be?”

If you just want to appreciate this special day or night alone from the safety of your bed, this Halsey track makes good company. Shorter than the other songs in this playlist, this song provides a cold breath over tear-stained cheeks.

Losing My Mind by Mystery Skulls

Lyrics to Look Out For: “Every day I’m losing my mind (Feels like they’re watching me)”

While Mystery Skulls’ “Hellbent,” “Ghost,” and “Magic” could have easily made this list, this song has been decidedly dedicated to those superstitious fellows who find themselves out on Friday the 13th against their will.

The Killing Moon by Echo & the Bunnymen

Lyrics to Look Out For: “In starlit nights I saw you / So cruelly you kissed me / Your lips a magic world / Your sky all hung with jewels / The killing moon / Will come too soon.”

Found in the 2001 cult classic movie “Donnie Darko,” this is the kind of song to listen to while watching the sunset as an unlucky day turns into a fateful night.

La Lune by Madeon ft. Dan Smith

Lyrics to Look Out For: “So we stay awake like we always do / And we try to recreate / And though nothing’s changed and I’m next to you / It doesn’t feel the same”

Confess your secrets and your heartbreaks to “La Lune.” Just as the moon changes while you can do nothing but sit back and watch, this track and its thought-provoking lyrics gets the heart racing and memories whirling.

Weird Dark Things by Bronze Whale ft. Khai

Lyrics to Look Out For: “I can feel it finally falling from my tongue / I can hear it / It’s alive now”

Here we have a song that is truly for those weird dark things that are out on the prowl tonight. The moon is bright, tattoos are cheap, and luck is at an all time low. Lose yourself in the thrum of this song, and get lost in a night powered by moonlight and pure belief.
