5 Scary/Horror Films to Watch Before Halloween

A few thrillers to watch to get your last minute October scares

As October comes to a close there is still time to watch your favorite Halloween movies if you haven’t done so already. With COVID-19 being the most scary thing this season, a way for you to still get your scare on in a safe way is by binge watching your favorite scary horror films. Here’s a list of must-watch scary horror films that you have to watch before October ends and the places you can go to stream them.

Scream (1996)

“Scream” is a classic teenage slasher film that was directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson. The film is noted as unique as it was different from other horror films at the time of its premiere. The movie follows Sidney Prescott, a high school student in Woodsboro, California played by actress Neve Campbell. In the city of Woodsboro, high school students begin to be targeted and killed by a masked maniac stalker. Prescott soon becomes the next target of the mysterious killer, referred to as Ghostface. The film is centered around her trying to survive the deadly onslaughts by her masked stalker. But the story doesn’t end there as it has three more films after it and its fifth film which will be coming out in 2022 to complete the series. Movies one through four can be streamed on Amazon prime video.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

“The Silence of the Lambs” is a thriller horror film that was directed by Jonathan Demme. In this film actress Jodie Foster plays Clarice Starling, a top student at the FBI’s training academy, is chosen to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Lecter, a psychiatrist who is also a psychopath and cannibal is serving life behind bars for murder and cannibalism. It is thought that Lecter has insight on a separate case, and Starling, a young beautiful woman, is sought after to extract this information from him. This Academy Award winning film can be streamed on Netflix.

The Shining 1980

Though this film is a bit of an oldie, it’s a goodie. In the film we watch actor Jack Nicholson play Jack Torance, a writer who decides to become the winter caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado. He settles into the hotel in hopes he can cure his writer’s block and brings his wife, Wendy and son, Danny. Danny, who has psychic premonitions, has disturbing visions which become more unsettling. Torrance discovers the hotel’s secrets and turns into a maniac fixed on terrorizing his family. “The Shining” can be streamed on Amazon prime video.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 1984

This is but another slasher film directed by Wes Craven. In this film, teenagers fall prey to Freddy Krueger played by actor Robert Englund. Krueger is a disfigured killer who targets teenagers in their dreams. When Krueger visits them not only do they die in their dreams but in reality as well. To escape Krueger’s wrath, Nancy and her boyfriend Glen try to figure out a long held secret that may be the key to figure out the mystery and rid themselves of Krueger. This film series has seven films in total which can all be streamed on Amazon prime video.

The Evil Dead 1981

This horror fantasy filmed by Sam Raimi is a classic for many. What was supposed to be a fun trip to a cabin in the woods turns into a real life nightmare. Five friends hike their way to a cabin and find a book called “The Necronomicon.” As they read the book aloud they unknowingly reawaken the dead and risk becoming a part of the evil dead. As each of the friends begin to become possessed, Ash played by actor Bruce Campbell has to make a difficult choice before morning to save his life. This film can be enjoyed and streamed on Netflix.
