After a two-game road trip to start the month of April, the Mounties hosted the Compton Tartars for an afternoon doubleheader. Defeating the Tartars by a score of 39-0 last month, the Mounties weren’t planning on letting up in a South Coast Conference matchup.

The Mounties started the game off with a bang as freshman first baseman Alyssa Rubalcava (21) launched a three-run home run to right field in the first inning. Soon after, sophomore third baseman Olivia Ortiz (14) followed up with an RBI single and eventually reached to second by an error. Still with no outs in the first inning, sophomore outfielder Amaris Guzman (31) reached first by an error, scoring Ortiz (14).

With another quick defensive inning, Rubalcava (21) scored in two runs with an RBI double in the second inning. Sophomore outfielder Ashley Diaz (6) brought in Rubalcava (21) with another RBI double for the Mounties.

Freshman pitcher Aleyna Urbina (7) finished her outing on the mound throwing three innings allowing no hits, no runs allowed and striking out five. Diaz (6) kept her hot streak going with another double and scored in two this time. Ortiz (14) picked up Diaz (6) and unleashed a two-run home run to deep left field.

Already up 12-0, Rubalcava (21) took a break from being lethal at the plate and closed the game on the mound. Giving up only one hit while striking out four in two innings, She closed out the game and secured the Mounties mercy rule win in five innings. The Mounties took this game with the final score 12-0.

Rubalcava (21) led the Mounties with five RBIs and was followed by Diaz (6) and Ortiz (14) who each had three.

Despite a new game starting, the Mounties didn’t miss a beat. Freshman middle infielder Janis Espinoza (19) got it started for the Mounties with an RBI single in the first inning. The first inning hit parade was just beginning, sophomore second baseman Desiree Bravo (22) got herself an RBI double to make it 2-0. Sophomore Mia Mendoza (8) then brought in Bravo (22) with an RBI single as the Mounties continued to get going early. Sophomore first baseman Alyssa Castaneda (5) reached on an error which brought in Mendoza (8) and capitalized the big first inning for the Mounties.

Bravo (22) came up clutch for the Mounties in the second inning with a bases-clearing three-run double to extend the lead to 7-0. Rubalcava (21) continued her pitching outing from game one and threw for two more innings allowing no hits and no runs with three strikeouts.

Sophomore catcher Celeste Cortez (15) had the only run in the third inning by cashing in an RBI single. Freshman outfielder Grace Archuleta (11) got the fourth inning started for the Mounties by scoring on a wild pitch and giving the Mounties a more than comfortable lead. Mendoza (8) brought in her second RBI of the day with a double in the fourth, securing the mercy win as long as the Mounties didn’t allow the Tartars to score in the fifth.

Freshman pitcher Mirannda Rodriguez (20) closed the game out in the last three innings, walking only one but striking out four with no runs or hits. Bravo (22) led the Mounties in game two hitting clinic with four RBIs and hitting 2 for 3.

Mounties took this game, 10-0.

The Mounties sweep the series against Compton Tartars to stay in first place in the SCC standings.

Mt. SAC will travel to Rio Hondo to play against the Roadrunners on Friday, at 3 p.m., for the season finale. Already winning the regular season series, the Mounties look to take the sweep against the Roadrunners before the matchup against Palomar who gave the Mounties one of their five losses this year.
