Finding community is essential. This March, El Centro hosted their event Finding Hermanas in Building 9C. A panel of 5 latina leaders, faculty, and staff answered questions about their own academic paths and experiences.
All panelists currently work at Mt. SAC. They’re here to inspire, motivate, and connect with other latina scholars of similar identities. Finding Hermanas was a safe space for women to engage in intimate discussions and share what it meant to be a latina scholar.
For student ambassador of El Centro, Deanna Hernandez, being a latina scholar meant being the first generation latina college student in her family, which inspired her mother to enroll in Mt. SAC herself.
62.45% of students ethnically identify as Latinx and over half of this diverse student body is female.
Beside being the two largest demographics in this instance, events like this show that various educators from our own identifying communities are here and available for connection and community.
More information could be found on El Centro’s website about their next event in April, Finding Familia.
