Dear reader,
Welcome to a new semester at Mt. SAC!
Last semester marked a milestone for SAC Media, not because of what we achieved internally, but because of how those changes helped us serve you better.
In an effort to bring you more coverage and a clearer understanding of your campus and community, we worked to expand both the depth and reach of our reporting.
Here’s what that meant for you:
Last Semester’s Wins
• To keep you better informed about campus life, we expanded our reporting, resulting in more than 100+ original stories focused on the people, events and issues that shape Mt. SAC.
• We worked diligently to streamline newsroom workflow to publish more consistently, producing our highest number of stories in a single week, giving you more timely coverage.
• To meet you where you are, we strengthened our online presence, generating over a quarter million engagements while sharing stories that connect campus to the surrounding community.
• We introduced more visual storytelling. We added more photography, audio and videos so stories weren’t just read, but experienced.
• We represented Mt. SAC at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) conference, bringing back insights to strengthen how we report for you.
• And behind the scenes, we worked to develop stronger writers and reporters so the stories you read remain clear, accurate, and meaningful.
Fall semester of 2025 helped us build our momentum through our “why” as I experienced a team that showed up consistently, covered diverse stories and learned how to work cohesively as a team.
All of this came from one shared focus: Understanding that student journalism isn’t just about covering what’s happening,It’s about helping you understand why it matters.
What This Semester Is About
This semester is about legacy.
Not for me, but for the newsroom you rely on.
As Alexander Hamilton said in the broadway hit musical, “What is a legacy? It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.”
As I enter my final semester at Mt. SAC as Editor-in-Chief, my goal is simple:
Leave SAC Media stronger so you continue receiving the reporting this campus deserves.
Here’s what we’re committing to:
1. Stronger Journalism
We’re working toward deeper reporting, with more context, more accountability and more clarity so you don’t just see what’s happening, but understand how decisions affect you.
2. Sharper Visual Identity
Expect clearer headlines, stronger photography and more intentional storytelling across platforms making it easier to stay informed.
3. Faster Publishing
By refining our workflow, we aim to bring you timely stories without sacrificing accuracy.
4. Representation and Visibility
We aim to elevate voices across campus that don’t always get the spotlight. This means telling stories that reflect the diversity of our students and educators, highlighting communities and perspectives that are often overlooked.
5. Accountability & Transparency
We will continue covering campus meetings, policy changes, student government and decisions that impact your daily college experience.
SAC Media exists because you deserve information. You deserve transparency. You deserve storytelling that reflects your campus and community.
Student journalism matters most when it stops asking: “What can we publish?”
And starts asking: “What does our audience need to understand?”
Many thanks to the hardworking staff I get the privilege and honor of sharing the newsroom with. And much love to our readers for the continued support; we hope you enjoy reading these stories just as much as we did making them.
We’re not just back.
We’re building toward a more transparent, honest and informed Mt. SAC for our entire community.
Your friendly neighborhood Editor-in-Chief,
Kevin Saporsantos
