Life gets busy. It’s awards season now, but when the nominated films originally came out, people thought that they would get around to going to the theater to see that buzzy new feature.
But when they finally find the time and the schedule, those films have vanished into the streaming abyss, only to be available to be seen by a sliver of subscribers. If one were paranoid or conspiratorial, one might think it was planned.
Films are an important part of our culture. They embody and manifest the moment and attempt to make it timeless through narrative. While some may think that the southern California film industry has seen better days, it’s still a leading contributor to the region’s economy and sense of identity.
One need not look any further than the Animation and Gaming department housed in building 13 here on campus to see the passions of our fellow students trying to turn their art into commerce.
Right now, students still have the opportunity to learn from the best by seeing these Academy Awards nominated films in the environment where they were meant to be seen, in a movie theater.
Many of the theater chains have different promotions and discounts available for a limited time period. See the resources listed below for links with details to the individual theater’s promotions.
Where to Watch the Best Picture Nominees

Harkins is offering a $50 all access pass that runs from February 27 to March 15
AMC is offering a marathon of best picture nominees spread over 2 Saturdays, March 7 and 14.

For those who are thinking that all these different options might be overwhelming, there’s help.
Atom Tickets offers a website that puts you at the center of the process of trying to see these best picture nominees before the Academy Awards ceremony on March 15. While this is by no means an endorsement of Atom tickets, the service was instrumental in creating the exhaustive viewing scheduling seen below.

Not everyone is going to attempt to see all of the Academy Award best picture nominees in the span of two weeks, but it would be amazing if you tried. For the next two weeks, local theaters are incentivizing you to see “Marty Supreme”, “Sinners”, “One Battle After Another” as well as all of the other Academy Awards Best Picture nominees. Catch them now before they slip away into the stream forever.
