On April 13, the Mt. SAC Writing Center hosted a writing workshop for students to attend featuring information on quotations and paraphrasing as part of their workshop series through the month of April.
The turnout for these workshops are varying as attendees have two means of accessing them; online through their newly implemented hybrid system, as well as attending in person.
“I think the highest attendance we’ve had so far is seven but online our attendance is still pretty robust,” Dr. Nicole Blean, the Writing Center’s assistant director said. “We had a total of 25 online and then we may have a handful in person.”
Those in attendance of this specific workshop were given help to further their understanding of quotations and paraphrasing. This assistance can be given by the various specialists within the center dedicated to helping students.
This is the third week of the workshops. They happen everyday save for weekends and the remaining Thursdays of the month of April. Each workshop has a different focus for students to attend should they need help with one of the subjects listed on the calendar.
April, however, isn’t the only month where these workshops will be taking place.
These workshops are hosted during the semester terms specifically, in most cases opening in the earlier parts of the semester until the end right before finals week.
“We do the workshops prior to finals week, typically March through the first week of June or the end of May,” Dr. Blean said. “They’ll start week two or three, prior to midterms.”
The subjects of each workshop vary. So while students may miss a specific focus, there remains a wide range of topics they may need help on and can get the proper assistance for.
“We will rotate the titles and the times,” Dr Blean said. “So if a workshop doesn’t work for a student, they can check the next months and something hopefully will work with their class schedule.”
These workshops are held in person at varying times and each date can be confirmed with a calendar found on the Mt. SAC portal. While held in person in building 26B-1563C, the events can be accessed remotely through zoom. Students can sign up for the Writing Center workshops here.
