As Spring moves toward Summer, why should admiration of nature be limited to one day?
This list consists of films and television series that showcase earth’s beauty to inspire appreciation of the natural world.
The Sound of Music
Filmed primarily on location in Austria and Germany, this beloved 1965 classic incorporates depictions of vast green hills, glistening silver lakes and snow-covered mountain tops. Its storyline relies on visual depictions of Austria to propel the plot, and allow viewers to understand and sympathize with Maria and Captain VonTrapp’s adoration for their homeland. These beautiful images of Earth have lived on within the film for 61 years now, and it is likely that this classic will remain adored for years to come.
Jurassic Park
This celebrated 1993 classic features stunning shots of the Hawaiian islands Kauai and O’ahu. Despite the terrifying footage of enormous prehistoric creatures, it is difficult not to be amazed by the scenic beauty of the expansive greenery and lush mountains displayed in the film. Although the reality of John Hammond’s vision did not turn out as he expected, the breathtaking landscapes highlighted in the film make it easier to imagine why he imagined Jurassic Park as a dinosaur utopia.
Yellowjackets
This spine-chilling series was first released in 2021, and is currently in production for its fourth and final season. This show may be unsettling, but it places a strong emphasis on the overwhelming power of nature. Set in the Canadian wilderness, the series includes images of wide-ranging forests in British Columbia. As the seasons change, the girls become more untethered from reality, while the forest arguably becomes more beautiful. This women’s varsity soccer team crash-landed in an undeniably breathtaking location.
Twilight
Anyone who has seen “Twilight” knows that the atmosphere is perhaps the most integral reason why it is continuously described as a “comfort” series by so many. Released between 2008 and 2012, the films include shots of cascading waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest. In addition, there are depictions of Oregon’s dark green forests and misty coastline. It is likely that with images as beautiful as these, the famous love triangle between Edward, Bella and Jacob is not the only thing that keeps fans rewatching.
Anne with an E
This Netflix series is one that celebrates the beauty of nature both thematically and visually. Three seasons of the show were released between 2017 and 2019. This series showcases stunning glimpses of Prince Edward Island and other parts of Canada, such as Ontario and Millbrook. Just sitting back and appreciating the tall grassy fields and views of the ocean is enough to make a person as infatuated with Earth and the allure of nature as Anne is.
