Women’s basketball has been taking over mainstream sports media more than ever in the organization’s history, and solidifying itself as a female athletic institution to be taken seriously.
Although the spotlight becomes harder when popular athletes associate themselves with individuals who outwardly speak the exact opposite.
Caitlin Clark, an athlete for the Indiana Fever, is amongst one of the most popular players in the Women’s National Basketball Association. She continues to break records and showcase her talent on the court.
The star player was the No. 1 draft pick in 2024 and had just come off an NCAA Championship appearance with the University of Iowa in her senior year.
According to her WNBA statistics, she’s been crowned the fastest player within the organization to surpass 1,200 points, 250 rebounds and 200 assists. All these feats were accomplished in 54 games, dethroning the great Diana Tarausi whose record was 62. Also, breaking the record for most points scored by a rookie with 769 total points.
Clark is also an ambassador for brands marketing toward motivating the younger generations of women to never give up.
Due to outshining players like her, the WNBA has had a surge in engagement within the past years. According to the Wall Street Journal, the organization was seeing around 380,000 viewers per game at the beginning of 2022, averaging 970,000 viewers at the end of the 2025 season.
Athletes like Clark, Angel Reese, Paige Bueckers and many other rookie players have most definitely increased those numbers. Their popularity fills the seats of the stadiums they play in. Not only are they stars on the court, but their social media presences amplified fan engagement to another level.
Caitlin Clark’s first season in the professional stage was full of expectations and pressure. And with the social media presence, comes a more vocal platform of overbearing fans and constant nit-pickers.
With this limelight, Clark has received mixed reactions from fans as she was featured during a concert with controversial country artist, Morgan Wallen. Videos of the main screens showcased Clark walking alongside Wallen and sending him off to stage.
From the outer lens, this quick appearance means so much more now in this social and political climate than ever. Especially for a high profile, socially vocal female athlete.
Many fans showcased their displeasure online. Comments stating they “thought she was better than that.”

Most of the uproar comes from the controversial situations Wallen gets himself into.
Morgan Wallen | Fake Apologies
Wallen himself has been involved in multiple situations regarding his tarnished reputation and faulty social perception. An ugly video resurfaced of him in 2021, proudly using racial slurs at his family home in Nashville, causing his previous record label to suspend his contract. Despite being dropped, a lengthy public apology and hefty donation to the right foundations had the loyal fans rallying around him once again.
The most recent event to spark his name within the political realm of the media. It’s been rumored that Wallen is a supporter of Donald Trump. Though he has denied these claims since the beginning of his career. Regardless, his music continues to attract fans that are conservative, republican or right-wing adjacent.
His denial of these claims can now be rethought, as his storming off the Saturday Night Live set was in perfect context. On March 29, 2025, Wallen was the musical guest and walked off stage without any goodbyes or thanks to the cast or host before the credits even rolled.
Soon after the episode aired, Wallen posted a photo to his Instagram story, captioned “Get me to God’s country.” The white text plastered on a photo of him inside his private jet.

It can be inferred that the post was in reference to the multiple political jokes regarding Trump and conservatives that aired on the comedy show that evening.
Sounds a lot like, “If the shoe fits.”
Fan Assimilation and Personal Association
Like Morgan Wallen, Cailtin Clark has unfortunately garnered fans that hold similar social and possibly political views to those who adore Morgan Wallen.
At the start of the 2025 WNBA season opener in May, a game where the Indiana Fever played the Chicago Sky, stirred tensions between players and fans. During that game, Caitlin Clark was matching up against her collegiate rival, Angel Reese.
The game was eventful and full of contact between players, and a heated foul call to Clark against Reese was the tip of the iceberg. When the foul is updated to a flagrant, the stadium erupts in uproar. Angry jeers and boos are all you hear on the game replay.
First hand accounts from spectators state that they heard racial slurs flying through the crowd specifically to Reese, leading to an investigation into the incident.
When being interviewed days after the game, Clark stated, “There’s no place for that in our game, and there’s no place for that in society. You know, certainly we want anyone in our arena, whether player or fan, to have a great experience.” She then went on to say that the stadium was roaring and she “didn’t hear anything” herself from where she was on the court, and she believes that the league will do the right thing in the investigation.
The investigation was then dismissed after the WNBA was “unable” to identify any evidence to the claims from fans in attendance and online.
While fans were qualmed by the vocalness of Clark within the media, who she associates herself with off the court speaks more than the words to a television camera.
Caitlin Clark has been notably close to her fellow Fever teammate, Sophia Cunningham. Cunningham herself has been involved in many online controversies, even earning the name “MAGA Barbie” as a nickname amongst online users.
Cunningham has been known to follow and interact with many right-wing politicians and endorsers on social media, and does not shy away from doing so. In public comments, Cunningham states she is “in the middle” of the political spectrum, but has not shied away from defending her teammate against political and social scrutiny, especially during the times of the investigation.
With how relevant Cailin Clark is outside of the basketball space, she garners so much attention, not only from the aspiring collegiate athletes, but those entering the realms of male-dominated sports at a young age.
Sports like basketball, hockey, and even flag football are seeing a surge of young female players entering the sport. She’s become such an inspiration to little girls everywhere, by being the standard blueprint of a hard worker and a masterful player.
Female athletes everywhere, especially collegiate, look to NCAA and those spotlight spaces as a way to launch their career and to make sure their names are ones to remember. Athletes like Clark, are top examples of hard work, dedication, and vocality.
When someone can’t put their money where their mouth is, how can anyone take what you say with meaning?
Whom she associates herself with and off the court speaks more volumes than many of the words she’s spoken publicly regarding the group of people who never want to see women succeed.
