Tiger Sugar, a popular boba stop from Taiwan, has made its way to greater Los Angeles.

Tiger Sugar opened in Taichung, Taiwan in late 2017. According to Eater Los Angeles, “The chain of drinkable desserts currently has 40 locations worldwide in Asia, Canada, and the U.S.” Two years later, and now with 40 stores opened under its name, the franchise opened its first store in the greater Los Angeles area in Rowland Heights, California on Oct. 26.

Tiger Sugar has already made its U.S. debut with two stores in New York. As soon as the store opened in Rowland Heights at 12 p.m., it was met with high anticipation with lines that continued to appear weeks after their grand opening.

“When we arrived, it did seem kinda small,” Alberto Luis Miguel Huerta, a junior at Cal State Fullerton, said. “I figured since it was such a well-renowned place it might be bigger.”

Tiger Sugar is best known for its Black Sugar Boba Milk with Cream Mousse, the first item on their menu. It is most noticeable from its syrup-streaked sides and instructions that one should shake it exactly 15 times for a more enjoyable experience.

“I find it unique that they tell you to shake it 15 times to get everything mixed well.” Wendy Deng, a junior at Cal Poly Pomona, said. “The taste is, unfortunately, isn’t as memorable as I thought it would be, but I can’t say much about it because I haven’t tried the other flavors to see if it’s any different. To me, it tastes like regular brown sugar milk tea.”

Huerta said he would recommend the drink to others, “but it wouldn’t be first on my list if I was looking for a drink with friends or something quick. Maybe if we planned a day out and wanted to treat ourselves to something with a hype surrounding it to flaunt, then definitely yes. So I do recommend Tiger Sugar, but not to those who can’t wait long for a drink.”

The Tiger Sugar store is located at 18330 Colima Road in Rowland Heights. The store is open 7 days a week from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.
