Mountie sports recap: Oct. 18-22

Scores and results of this week’s games

Another eventful week for Mt. SAC’s student-athletes both at home and away. From blown-out games to last-second play, it has been an action-packed week that you won’t want to miss.

But in case you did, here are the recaps.

Tuesday, Oct. 18

Soccer: Mt. SAC Mounties vs. East Los Angeles Huskies at home

The women’s team destroyed the Huskies’ defense. Scored seven goals in the first half and continued to dominate by adding five more goals before the final whistle. The Mounties owned the scoreboard with a 12-0 victory over the Huskies, extending their winning streak to 11 games.

Three Mounties scored twice, including midfielder Karissa Vela (10), forward Zuhayle Diaz (13) and midfielder Mariela Garcia (25). Six Mounties netted one goal apiece, including forward Joie Juarez (6), midfielder Kaylee Gutierrez (8), forward Ayuka Toshimoto (9), forward Ava Ochoa (14), defender Fatima Arnold (18) and forward Natalia Reyes (20).

The men’s team also brought their scoring boots this game. The Mounties found the back of the net five times before the halftime whistle and managed to find it one more time before the match ended. They managed to bounce back from a 2-game losing streak with a 6-0 victory over the Huskies.

Forward Frank Gonzalez (12) led the way with two goals, followed by midfielder Alex Mendez (10), forward Edward Castro (11), forward Andrew Vazquez (14), midfielder Jason A. Garcia (23), defender Jonathan Vivar (24) and attacker Ernesto Figueroa-Lopez (27) all scored a goal each.

Wednesday, Oct. 19

Water polo: Mt. SAC Mounties vs. Cerritos College Falcons at home

The women’s team was determined to get back on the winning side after losing their last match. The Mounties ended the first quarter with a 2-1 lead and never looked back. They were up by as many as four goals until the last quarter. Still, they managed to fend off the Falcons and won the game by the final score of 8-6.
Attacker Alexis Ramirez (9) led the team with three goals, followed by driver Jayde Gutierrez (12) with two goals. Attacker Alyssa Fox (2), Utility Xen Allen (5) and Nature Reep (7) all contributed one goal apiece.

The men’s team ended their two-game losing streak with a 12-8 victory over the Falcons by scoring three goals in every quarter. Although the Falcons tried to stay close until the second quarter, the Mounties pulled away in the third.

Utility Zack Ewing (16) and Brandon Fabrega (22) both scored three times and dished out three assists in this game. While Aidan Murphy (2), Edward (EJ) Lynch (5) and Diego Lopez (9) all scored twice.

Volleyball: Mt. SAC vs. Rio Hondo Roadrunners at home

The Mounties’ eight-game winning streak was ended by the Roadrunners. After losing their first set 23-25, the Mounties came back to win the next two sets by 25-17, then lost two sets straight, 18-25 and 10-15.

Despite a match-high 26 assists from setter Kylie Rhodes (7) from the offensive end and another match-high 20 digs from hitter/blocker Riley DeGroot (20), the Mounties fell short and lost to the visitor, 3-2.

Thursday, Oct. 21

Soccer: Mt. SAC Mounties vs. Pasadena City College Lancer at PCC

Big wins from both the women’s and men’s teams this week.

After coming off a convincing victory easier this week, the Mounties continued to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with. This time, the proving ground was in the city of Pasadena. They led by a goal during halftime and increased the gap by getting three more goals before the match ended – a 4-0 victory for the Mounties.

A pair of goals from midfielder Kaylee Gutierrez (8), one goal from midfielder Karissa Vela and an own goal by the Lancers was proven enough to extend their current winning streak to 12. Another clean-sheet performance by the Mounties’ No.1 Leila Peregrina.

The men’s team also put on a show in Pasadena by mounting a 2-games win streak. The Mounties controlled the game until the stoppage time. Lancers’ defender Jordy Aviles (29) managed to score one at home in the 90 minute mark. Adding to the 7-1 victory, the Mounties’ seven goal score became their new season high.
Midfielder Alex Mendez (10) and forward Edward Castro (11) both scored twice, followed by forward Andrew Vazquez, Ivan Morales (15) and Ernesto Figueroa-Lopez (27) all scored one goal each.

Water polo: Game 1 – Mt. SAC Mounties vs. San Diego Mesa Olympians at Santa Monica College

The women’s water polo team played two games this day. The first one at 3:00 p.m. against the Olympians and the second one against the Corsairs at 6 p.m. Despite this challenge, the Mounties came out victorious for both games.

The Mounties started out strong by outscoring the Olympians 6-2 in the first quarter and they never looked back, ending the game with a 14-8 victory. Their top scorers were Utility Xen Allen (5) and Nature Reep (7) both scored four times, closely followed by driver Jayde Gutierrez (12) with three goals. Attacker Alyssa Fox (2) and Daniella Lopez (12) and driver Shauna Mercado (16) also contributed one goal each.

Game 2 – Mt. SAC Mounties vs. Santa Monica College Corsairs at SMC

Their dominance continued. Their next match against the Corsairs was also a convincing one. The Mounties led all the way, starting a four-goals lead to end the first quarter, then an eight-goals lead to end the second quarter and a nine-goal lead to end the third quarter that eventually ended in a 15-6 victory.

Nature Reep (7) led the pack again by scoring four goals and Utility Xen Allen (5) followed by three goals. Attacker Alyssa Fox (2) and Brianna Castillo (8) netted in two apiece. Attacker Ariana Moran (3) and Daniella Lopez (11) also scored one goal each.

Volleyball: Mt. SAC Mounties vs. Cerritos College Falcons at Cerritos College

After losing their last game, the Mounties were ready to start a new winning streak by defeating the Falcons. That was exactly what happened. Mounties took the game in three straight sets, 25-10, 25-18 and 25-19.

Sitter Kylie Rhodes (7) had another match-high 22 assists, tied with Falcons’ Carissa Mendibles (8). Rhode (7) was supported by match-high 14 kills by hitter Allison Whiteman (23) and 13 kills by hitter Angelina Burton (9) in this victory.

Saturday, Oct. 22

Football: Mt. SAC Mounties vs. Riverside City College Tigers

The Mounties were handed their first loss in all competitions this season, a 33-35 loss after three overtimes. Although the Mounties trailed the Tigers throughout the first three quarters, they did manage to take the lead 26-23 in the fourth quarter. But the Tigers would not give up as they led most of the game.

With minutes left in the game, the Mounties failed to hold the Tigers off and the game was tied 26-26.

During the first overtime, the Tigers struck first with a touchdown, but the resilient Mounties delivered a touchdown to tie the game once more at 33-33 to push it to the second overtime.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second overtime, so the game extended again to a third overtime. After the Mounties failed a 40-yards field goal attempt, the Tigers scored to take a 2-points lead.

As time ran out, the Mounties’ last attempt to score was intercepted. So, the game ended 33-35 in favor of the Tigers.
